THE PAINTINGS

My work and my world view are inextricably linked. What interests me are patterns, repeating patterns in nature, conditioned patterns in culture and human behavior, and patterns we choose, in freedom and awareness to create.  The paintings began as “Points of Attention,” became “Lines of Attraction” or “Spirit Stripes,” growing outward in circular designs like growth rings, to become “Mandalas.”  They evolve from and return to a silent, empty core. Traditionally, the mandala is a symbol of wholeness, used to expand or focus consciousness.

THE JEWELRY

My interest in patterns continues in woven beaded jewelry, where I explore patterns of pleasure in the harmonious blend of stone, metal, and melted glass. I indulge my love of the materials, and, using the loose and playful approach they inspire, execute complex designs in the simple joy of working with my hands.

COLLAGE, 3-D, BOOK ARTS

I spent a cycle covering objects with collaged imagery. Simple boxes became lap desks, trays, tables, game boards and headboards. A two-part catalyst and resin gave me a small window in which to pour, before the resin hardened to a clear layer that made the surface functional and produced a glassy window to the images. I adapted Italic calligraphy to my own style and made hand-made paper, fold-out books of quotes and text, notebooks and 3-D forms sculpted from printed text.
